Where in Europe is Carmen Sandiego? (1988)
The 1988 entry that zoomed in on the nations of Europe and bundled a Rand McNally atlas as the player's reference.
Overview
Where in Europe Is Carmen Sandiego? (1988) tightens the map again, sending the player across more than thirty European nations in pursuit of V.I.L.E. The closer focus let the designers draw on the dense geography, history, and culture of the continent for its clues.
Gameplay
The familiar loop applies: follow destination clues from country to country, gather suspect traits, and issue a warrant before the arrest. To decode the clues, players drew on the boxed reference materials and the in-game tools — a crime-lab database, a detective's guide, and on-screen descriptions of each city and country.
The game shipped with Rand McNally's Concise Atlas of Europe, which players consulted to match clues about borders, capitals, currencies, and landmarks to the right nation — once again making a real reference book part of the puzzle.
