The Netflix era & the interactive special

History9 contributors

Gina Rodriguez put on the coat for a four-season Netflix cartoon and a branching interactive special, while a live-action film has stayed in development since 2018.

Netflix's animated Carmen Sandiego debuted January 18, 2019, and ran four seasons and 32 episodes before concluding January 15, 2021. It was developed by Duane Capizzi and produced by WildBrain's Vancouver studio with HarperCollins Productions and I Can & I Will Productions; executive producers included Caroline Fraser, Anne Loi, and (from season two) Kirsten Newlands. Gina Rodriguez voiced Carmen, with Finn Wolfhard as the unnamed “Player” character, Michael Hawley as Zack, and Abby Trott as Ivy. The premise flipped the original games' structure: rather than an unseen quarry, this Carmen is a V.I.L.E.-trained thief working against her old employers as the show's protagonist. The series was nominated for the inaugural Children's & Family Emmy Award for Outstanding Children's Program in 2019 and won a separate, juried Children's & Family Emmy that year for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation, awarded to background painter Elaine Lee for the episode “The Chasing Paper Caper.”

To Steal or Not to Steal

On March 10, 2020, Netflix released Carmen Sandiego: To Steal or Not to Steal, a 45-minute interactive special set between the second and third seasons, in which viewer choices steer Carmen's response to a V.I.L.E. scheme holding Zack and Ivy hostage. Its interactive branching was removed from Netflix on December 1, 2024; the special has continued to stream as a fixed, linear cut since.

The live-action film that hasn't happened yet

Netflix announced a live-action Carmen Sandiego feature film in March 2018, with Gina Rodriguez attached to both star and produce alongside Kevin Misher, Caroline Fraser and Andy Berman. As of Rodriguez's most recent public comments, in September 2024, the project remained in development with no confirmed release date; she has said she'd like it to lead to “multiple films” but that the team's focus for now is getting the first one made. No further public update on the film's status was verifiable at the time of writing.
