1985 vs Deluxe Edition

Overview

The Deluxe Edition of Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego? is Brøderbund's substantial remake of the 1985 original, built to take advantage of newer hardware and the CD-ROM format. It keeps the original's detective loop intact while greatly expanding the presentation and the content.

What changed

Compared with the 1985 release, the Deluxe edition adds:

• High-resolution VGA graphics and a reworked interface with additional animation.
• Digitised photographs — sourced from National Geographic — and music drawn from Smithsonian Folkways recordings.
• Spoken dialogue: it was the first game in the series to feature speech played aloud.
• A much larger world: around sixty countries, sixteen maps, twenty villains, and more than three thousand clues.
• Three ways to gather clues at each stop — questioning bystanders, searching the area, or calling "Crime Net".

Same game underneath

Despite the overhaul, the fundamentals are the 1985 game's: chase a V.I.L.E. crook city to city, read destination and trait clues, file an Interpol warrant, and work up the ranks toward catching Carmen. The Deluxe edition is best understood as the original loop given a far richer coat of paint and a bigger map. A later Windows release continued the line in 1994.

“Enhanced” is not “Deluxe”

One point trips up collectors. Before this CD-ROM-era Deluxe Edition, Brøderbund put out a separate “Enhanced” reissue of the 1985 game for 16-bit machines, around 1989 — that one mainly swapped CGA for VGA and added mouse support, keeping the original's scope. The Deluxe edition described here is the bigger, later rebuild with digitised photos, real-world music, spoken dialogue and a world of roughly sixty countries. They are two different releases, often confused because both improve on the same 1985 original.
