The North Dakota rediscovery
How the rarest game in the series vanished into school storerooms and was tracked back down decades later.
Where in North Dakota Is Carmen Sandiego? (1989) is the only entry set inside a single U.S. state, and for years it was less a game than a rumour. Built by Minot schoolteachers on a state grant and pressed for the classroom, it sold roughly 5,000 copies — almost all to schools in the region — and was never given a normal retail run. As the Apple II aged out, the boxes were binned. Today only three retail copies are known to exist.
Missing from the record
The title was so obscure it didn't even appear in the donated Brøderbund archive held by The Strong museum. Around 2014–2015, Frank Cifaldi of the Video Game History Foundation noticed the gap while reading up on the franchise and started asking questions in public — which reached Craig Nansen, the technology coordinator who had driven the project in the first place.
Recovered
In June 2016 Cifaldi travelled to Minot, interviewed the teachers who wrote it, and came home with a box of original development materials — including the committee's hand-made Carmen's North Dakota Almanac. The game was digitised and preserved, and is archived today at the Internet Archive. The recovery is now cited as a model case of how local, “unimportant” software slips through the cracks of history — and how it can be pulled back. The state-by-state pilot it was meant to launch never happened: no other state edition was ever made.
