Ports & re-releases

Versions6 contributors

How the Carmen Sandiego games spread across home computers and consoles and resurfaced in later collections.

The series began on the Apple II in 1985 and was ported far and wide. The original alone reached MS-DOS, the Commodore 64, the Amiga, the Atari ST, the Apple IIGS, classic Mac OS, and a long list of other home computers, with later console conversions appearing on systems such as the Master System, Genesis, TurboGrafx-16, and Super NES.

From floppy to CD-ROM

As hardware advanced, Brøderbund revisited the early titles. The Deluxe remake of the World game moved to CD-ROM with VGA art, digitised photographs, and spoken dialogue, and a Windows version followed in 1994. Several of the other geographic titles received similarly enhanced or updated editions through the early 1990s.

Preservation

Because the games were such enormous sellers in schools and homes, the classic MS-DOS releases are well preserved today and run cleanly under emulation — which is how the original loop is playable on this site. The clue data and reference-book design, rather than any single platform's graphics, are what carried the series across so many machines.
