Where in Europe Is Carmen Sandiego? (1988) is the third major title and the one that taught the crime computer to talk back. The chase tightens to a single continent — better than thirty European nations — and leans hard into the dense geography, languages and money of the place. In the fiction, V.I.L.E. is brazen enough to make off with whole mountain ranges.

The first database you can interrogate

Earlier games gave you clues to read. Where in Europe gave you a machine to question. Built into the crime computer is a searchable database: feed it what a witness told you — flag colours, the currency in use, the languages spoken — and it narrows the next country for you. A game tied to its moment

As the Berlin Wall came down and the map of the continent redrew itself around 1990, the game's roster of nations dated almost overnight, and Brøderbund retired it rather than chase the borders.
