The name and look of Carmen Sandiego

History8 contributors

How a scriptwriter's pun on a Californian city and an ex-Disney animator's sketch became one of software's most recognisable silhouettes.

Scriptwriter David Siefkin, who wrote the first draft of the story for Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego? before leaving the project for a U.S. State Department post, invented the character's full name: Carmen Isabella Sandiego. “Sandiego” plays on the city of San Diego, California; “Carmen” nods to the Brazilian-American performer Carmen Miranda. When the name later drew objection from some Hispanic community members — a globally wanted thief carrying a Spanish surname — Brøderbund co-founder Gary Carlston answered, only half seriously, that Sandiego was her married name and her maiden name was the Swedish “Sondberg.”

The coat and the hat

The visual design is generally credited to artist Gene Portwood, a former Disney animator; his design partner Lauren Elliott has said the credit for the character concept belongs to Portwood specifically. The team wanted a female antagonist rather than a male one — in Elliott's words, “girls [could] be just as bad” as any villain in the genre. Why red was the chosen colour for the coat and fedora specifically isn't documented in any source consulted for this entry; what's certain is that the silhouette — red trench coat, wide-brimmed matching fedora, dark hair, gloves — was fixed early and has stayed Carmen's signature across four decades of games, a game show, two cartoons, and a Netflix series.

What changed underneath the coat

The details around that fixed silhouette moved with the times. Early Apple II and DOS releases put a yellow or orange dress under the coat; the streamlined Deluxe and Windows-era redesigns kept the coat but modernised the rest of the outfit; the 2019 Netflix series (see The Netflix era & the interactive special) swapped the dress for a black catsuit to suit an athletic, reformed-thief protagonist rather than an unseen antagonist. The 2025 Gameloft game went a step further and put the player directly inside the coat for the first time, playable as Carmen rather than chasing her. Across every redesign, the coat, the hat, and the name Siefkin wrote in 1983–84 have never changed.
